27 October 2005: demise of Lucy's engineering plant
Chris Brooke's excellent site The
Virtual Stoa has pictures of Lucy's engineering plant, in
Jericho in Oxford, now rapidly in demise, as it waits to be sold
off: for more high-price housing, I presume.
Between 1992 and
1995, I used to stand outside the plant for many weeks,
sporadically selling Socialist Worker. Friends tell stories
about one time when we were there and I heard a dog barking, which
was enough to make me cower: it turned out to be just a pooch.
By
the end of the 1990s, I knew many of the stewards there, including
one who had a lucrative second career as a band manager. Friends
wrote SW workplace bulletins, eventually depositing a run
of them in the Oxford library, where there was already a long run
of Lucy's bulletins, the previous incarnation having been written
by members of the Communist Party as far back as the 1930s.
