July 2005: things can't be that bad after all
With the Guardian reporting that 2/3 of British Muslims have considered leaving the country since 7 July (to anyone who doesn't know their census, that's 1 million very nervous people), there are obviously plenty of reasons to feel miserable just now. But, I spent today in Oxford, chiefly baby-sitting while my partner spent a day in the archives, and to my great joy I saw that the two graffiti dinosaurs on Museum Road are still there. For people who don't know them, they're both about 4 foot tall. They're also at least ten years old. One says 'Remember the dinosaur. KPG' The other says 'I did, and look what happened to me.' I didn't make this up: the dinosaurs are mentioned at various places on the web. I've never known who sprayed the dinosaurs or why, although there are plenty of urban myths about them. It's hard to explain, but they appeal to me: I like the fact that they don't make any sense at all. If they're still standing, the world can't be an entirely bad place.
