25 January: seventy years since the Jarrow Crusade

I have just finished reading Matt Perry's excellent new book on the Jarrow march. Generally, I don't like historians describing collective memory as 'myth'. I've been very critical of people who do exactly that when writing about another event from the same year, the Battle of Cable Street. But when Perry makes the point, I find his argument convincing.

The Crusade didn't secure more jobs for Jarrow.

Perry criticises from the left the usual story of the crusade, celebrating the march, and calling for further, more militant protests in future.

Best of all, the book is extremely well researched: when someone lists a dozen private collections that they've dug up and cuttings from more than 80 different newspapers, you know they've done the work.

The publishers have a website here

Does anyone know of plans to commemorate the Crusade this autumn?

Is anyone planning to retrace the route?

Jarrow to London in a month, starting 5 October.
