January 2006: when will the Saville inquiry report?
I've
just finished reading Eamon McCann's new book, The
Bloody Sunday Inquiry, on the Saville inquiry, what the
families made of it, the tensions between them, and between some
family members and some lawyers, their impressions of Saville and
their hopes for the report. Given how badly Saville was reported,
here in Britain, I'm profoundly glad now to have a better sense of
what it found.
Will the families get justice? You can read for
yourself their doubts about the testimony of the former members of
the Official IRA, who did have a rifle in Derry on the day, and
began shooting, after the British soldiers had already attacked
the march. Will this evidence be used as the vital stick, with
which to beat the families?
Several family members have doubts in
Saville: his body language, his attitude toward the people of
Derry, his clear defence of Heath.
The other thing which comes out
of the book is that 245 British soldiers spoke to the inquiry
(more than I would ever have guessed). While the paratroopers
stuck to each other's stories like glue, soldiers from other
regiments could be more honest, describing paras firing
indiscriminately on the march, one para even shooting from the
hip.
The book
states that Saville's report is due to be
published in 'early 2006'. Yet the most recent document
published on the
inquiry website, from August 2005, says that it is impossible
to give 'any firm estimate' of when the report will appear.
